Welcome to the Tarot-Scope! This week is special because we get to experience the winter solstice and a new moon on Sunday. That’s a blessed yule to some of y’all! It’s also just a few days before this holiday and smack dab in the middle of that holiday.

Needless to say, things are getting busy.

Making the most of the longest night of the year requires a smart, pre-game feast. This week’s spread is the Prix Fixe. Starting from the left is the Appetizer, then the Main Course is served just above the Side Dish, with the Dessert on the right side.

So, let’s draw the cards and see what kind of special the Universe is offering this week…

Appetizer–The Sun

Main Course–The Empress

Side Dish–Judgement

Dessert–The Coins

If you want a delicious dinner, you need to study the menu and choose wisely.

It’s fitting that the Appetizer course in this week’s Austin tarot is the glorious Sun, since the actual sun is reaching one of its extremes. The Sun represents the sparkling vitality in our lives–the things that make us happy, the things that nourish our souls. What are you in the mood for? What do you like and what makes you feel good? Are you up for trying something new? Pick the appetizer that’s going to set the tone for the rest of the meal.

The Main Course is therapeutic dose of love from the Empress. She’s like the First Lady to the Emperor’s President. She’s a strong, feminine partner in managing the practical parts of life. Having the Empress plan the menu can be good or bad, depending on what she thinks you need. If you’ve been good, she might indulge you with something decadent and rich. If you’ve been bad, you might have to eat something you don’t like because it’s good for you.

But don’t let mom’s insistence that you eat-the-goshdang-broccoli-already ruin a good night, especially if you know broccoli will make you break out in hives! Rely on the Side Dish of Judgement to keep you safe from harm. Yeah, yeah, maybe a particular dish was poorly prepared, maybe you changed your mind, or maybe you shouldn’t have ordered it in the first place. Be sure to take responsibility for your share of the check, but just because it’s on your plate, doesn’t mean you have to eat it.

And what do we have for Dessert? A big ol’ slice of Coin pie, that’s what! The Coins (or Pentacles in other tarot traditions) symbolize the material realm, the trappings of our 3-D existence on this planet. Getting your money’s worth requires being honest about what price you’re willing to pay. If you paid attention to your needs and ordered well, dessert should be the tasty culmination of a triumphant strategy. If you denied your needs and ordered to please someone or something else, dessert will be bitter indeed.

As we move into another half of the solar year, it’s important to take stock of what we ate and how it made us feel. Think of the meals you loved and the meals you hated. Keep them in your mind moving forward so you can make better decisions. This week is sure to be a thick stew of pitfalls and opportunities. Be mindful of what’s on your spoon and you’ll come away from the table satisfied.

Bon Appetit!
