This weekend, Fun Fun Fun Fest comes to our city with acts like Judas Priest, Wiz Khalifa, and Modest Mouse. Yes, it promises to be a great time. But it’s also an expensive time, and there’s still plenty of folks around town who are still recovering from Austin City Limits Festival.

This list is for those people. There are still plenty of great live shows this weekend to delight every musical taste, From a black-tie gala event in support of Austin musicians to a showcase from one of Austin’s most dedicated non-profits, here are the shows that will fill your weekend with fun, fun, fun — without all that hurt on your wallet.

The Austin Music Foundation Showcase at Strange Brew

Friday, November 7, 6 p.m.

For years, the Austin Music Foundation (AMF) has been one of the most beloved nonprofits in town, providing musicians with the tools and education they need to make their careers successful. This Friday, they will put on a killer showcase at Strange Brew featuring some of our city’s most talented musicians, including Kalu James, South Austin Moonlighters, Paula Maya, and Gina Chavez. We first fell in love with Kalu James at The Motown Tribute a few weeks ago when he sang “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” with Barbara Nesbitt. He has a beautiful set of pipes that will send chills down your spine. And of course, we’ve loved the South Austin Moonlighters since they formed. So, if you know what’s good for you, be sure to catch this amazing show.

Charlie Faye and Amy Black at Strange Brew

Saturday, November 8, 9 p.m.

Charlie Faye has been a much-loved singer/songwriter on the Austin music scene for years now, as well as an activist and community organizer. Charlie’s music has taken her across the country, and she’s played with esteemed musicians like Will Sexton and Natalie Merchant, to name just a couple. Her lovely voice and heartfelt songs make Charlie a pleasure to watch live, especially at Strange Brew, one of Austin’s best listening rooms. Amy Black, a Boston-based singer/songwriter, will join Charlie on stage, and she’s just as much of a treat to hear. Like Charlie, Amy has also played with some of the most illustrious names in the business, including Emmylou Harris, Chris Isaak, and Delbert McClinton. Simply put, there’s no going wrong with this show.

The Greencards at Threadgill’s South

Friday, November 7, 9 p.m.

This Grammy-nominated Americana band formed in Austin back in 2002, and in a little more than a decade they have become a powerhouse on the scene. In addition to their win at the 2006 Americana Honors & Awards for “New/Emerging Artist of the Year,” The Greencards have also toured with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan. They are currently on tour across the country in support of their Grammy-nominated album “Sweetheart of the Sun,” and Friday night is their stop in Austin. Come see why folks like Time and Rolling Stone rave about these cats — you won’t regret it.

The Black Ball Gala at The Paramount

Saturday, November 8, 7 p.m.

Black Fret kicks off its inaugural Black Ball this Saturday night at Austin’s historic Paramount Theatre. The prestigious nonprofit, which formed a little more than a year ago, offers financial support to Austin musicians who have proven their talent and dedication. In addition to the incredible performances by Black Fret 2014 Nominees Erin Ivey, Elizabeth McQueen, Mother Falcon, Danny Malone, Quiet Company, and The Rocketboys, attendees will be the first to learn which ten nominees are receiving Black Fret’s coveted $10,000 grants. With more than a dozen bands slated to perform, along with some special guests, this promises to be an amazing night. Those who wish to attend the Black Ball must be members of Black Fret, but you can join right here.

Wanderlust Festival on East 4th Street

November 6-November 9

For Austinites who prefer their festivals to be a little more laid back than ACL or Fun Fun Fun Fest, Wanderlust is the perfect antidote. A self-proclaimed “yoga block party,” this four-day event combines the best of everything this city has to offer, from great bands to outdoor activities, food, drink, and so much more. Featuring yoga classes, live music, races, city bike runs, and even paddle-boarding events, this is the ultimate Austin experience. Bands playing the festival include Austin favorites White Ghost Shivers, Happy Happy James, and The Urban Achievers Brass Band.
