These Five Austin Shows Will Put Some Heat On Your Weekend

With the end of the festival season (for now) and the beginning of the holiday season, a deep freeze has come to our city. To borrow words from Frank Loesser, “Baby, it’s cold outside,” but our bars and venues are heating up with a ton of great local music. Some of our best bands, like Megafauna, have come home from long tours, while others like The Bluebonnets are holding electrifying CD release parties.

For local music lovers, this is the best time of the year for live shows. The tourists are gone, the sweltering heat is gone, and the local bands are treating audiences to the best music our city has to offer. So forget the cold, put your boots on,  and head to one or more of these sizzling shows.

GOBI at Empire Control Room

Friday, November 14, 9 p.m.

Austin EDM band Gold on Black Ice, also known as GOBI is one of the most unique acts on the local scene. Combining the best of rap, hip hop, dance music, and Latino rhythms, these guys defy categorization. They manage to combine smart lyrics with an intoxicating beat that makes them some of the best live performers in the city. This Friday, they’ll be celebrating the release of their single, “Dream with Me.” This is one of GOBI’s rare Austin performances, so do not miss the chance to dance until you drop.

The Bluebonnets CD Release Party at The Continental Club

Friday, November 14th, 10 PM

It’s been too long since we’ve had new material from one of Austin’s most talented all-female bands. Featuring Kathy Valentine and Dominique Davalos of the Go-Go’s, The Bluebonnets are the perfect combination of glamor and grit. Part Texas blues, part garage rock, they are the perfect way to heat up your weekend. This Friday night, they celebrate the release of their new CD “Play Loud.” True to the title of their latest effort, they promise an unbridled, balls to-the-wall show. The Continental is guaranteed to be packed for this one, so get there early.

Shinyribs at The Soul of a Musician Series, Spicewood Tavern

Sunday, November 16, 7:30 p.m.

Since they formed less than a decade ago, Shinyribs have seen their star rise consistently, and these past few years have been especially stellar for them. After playing a dazzling set at ACL Fest last year, they headlined a packed show at “Blues on the Green” this summer and were just featured on “Texas Music Scene” last weekend. Easily one of the most popular bands in Texas right now, these fantastic musicians will bring their soul-stirring, blues-steeped music to Spicewood Tavern this Sunday. The Soul of a Musician series is a truly special experience, and there are only a handful of shows left this year.

Two Hoots and A Holler At C-Boy’s Heart and Soul

Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15, 10 p.m.

For three decades, Rick Broussard has been a beloved figure on the local music scene. His award-winning band Two Hoots and A Holler comes to C-Boy’s this weekend and promises to rock the joint with their own brand of rockabilly, country, and blues. They’ll be playing their classics, along with songs from their lauded CD, “Come and Take It,” which manages to mix the best of good-timing Texas music with some sweet dance-hall and even some Ramones-tinged punk. Practice your Two Step before you head to this one. Folks love to dance at C-Boy’s and this is the perfect band to help them cut a serious rug.

Rockerz for Knockerz at The Palm Door

Sunday, November 16, 1 p.m.

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Austin than listening to some great local bands, drinking great cocktails, and raising funds for a worthy cause. Presented by Pink Avocado and Titsy LaRue, Rockerz for Knockerz promises a full day of music and merriment to help raise money for local voice actor Susie Bryant, who was diagnosed with breast cancer eight months ago. Part of the funds raised will go toward offsetting Susie’s medical expenses, and the rest will benefit HAAM. The line-up for this afternoon of revelry includes some incredible bands, including The Wyldz, The Boxing Lesson, and The South Austin Moonlighters.
