In the last few months of 2014, our city will be graced by some of the most popular live music acts in the world, from Duran Duran to Chrissie Hynde, and the waning days of October are no exception. While Formula One and all of the race-related festivities begin next weekend, this weekend is all about getting back to basics and loving the local artists who make Austin’s music scene special.

Will Sexton at One-2-One Bar

Bearing one of the most famous last names on the Austin music scene, Will Sexton is a local icon and One-2-One Bar is the perfect place to see him live. The singer/songwriter/producer has led an incredibly busy year touring all across the country, but it’s always special to see him in his hometown. Will has worked with some of the greatest musicians in the world and written songs with the likes of Waylon Jennings, Bill Carter, and Stephen Stills. He has also collaborated with Roky Erikson, Steve Earle, and Johnny Thunders. Do not miss this legend while he is in town.
Stax and Motown Tribute at The Cactus Cafe
Friday, October 24, 8 p.m.
This weekend kicks off with one of the most joyous tributes in town, as Austin’s favorite singers pay tribute to the greats of Motown and Stax Records. With a line-up that includes Charlie Faye, Barbara Nesbitt, Kalu James, Guy Forsyth, and Jaimee Harris, this promises to be a night to remember. The knock-out house band includes acclaimed bass player Lonnie Trevino, Jake Owen, and Kyle Thompson. Come dressed to the nines, and pay proper respect to the legends of Hitsville and Soulville.
Guy Forsyth Blues Band at Austin Alehouse

This weekend marks the second anniversary of Captivate Conference, which draws creative professionals from the worlds of gaming, film, and music from all over the country to network, learn, and come together as a community. Award-winning blues and americana artist Guy Forsyth is the perfect act to start the conference in true Austin style. Bonus: Attendees of the conference will be admitted for free, and the first beer is on the house.
Dale Watson at Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon

It just does not get any better than Dale Watson playing live at Ginny’s. Dale is in the middle of a meteoric rise over the last few years, with an appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and a stunning SXSW showcase at the Saxon Pub this year alone. With his signature pompadour and deep, sultry voice, this renowned singer and guitar slinger is an Austin treasure, and Ginny’s is one of our many hidden gems. Basically, catching Dale’s show is the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Austin.
Soul of a Musician Series w/Erin Ivey at Spicewood Tavern

Erin Ivey has been the penultimate singer/songwriter here in Austin for years now, but 2014 has been particularly golden for her. Erin’s CD, “Whisper of The Moon,” is on the ballot for the 57th annual GRAMMY Awards, and she is one of the nominees for a prestigious Black Fret grant that will be announced in just a few weeks. With her dreamy voice, Erin is a true beauty inside and out, and a real pleasure to watch live. Join her as she shares her stories and her gorgeous music at this Sunday’s installment of the Soul of A Musician Series.
