IAN McLAGAN & THE BUMP BANDNever Say Never Maniac Records (Release Date 6.24.08) Never Say Never is the latest entry in keyboardist Ian McLagan's mile-long discography, which started in his native England in the ‘60s with Small Faces and Faces. If you've heard "Maggie May," "Maybe I'm Amazed," or "Stay With Me," you've heard Mac. When the Rolling Stones finally came to Austin in 2006, McLagan was on the bill both as a longtime friend of the Stones, and as a longtime local musician: McLagan moved to Austin in 1994, where he and the Bump Band have a regular Thursday happy hour gig at the Lucky Lounge. Never Say Never comes out of the gate slowly with the blues. The title track frames the album as a tribute to his wife, Kim, who died in an automobile crash two years ago. Many of the songs have echoes of loss, especially the heartfelt "Where Angels Hide." Patty Griffin (who sings on four cuts) and the Tosca String Quartet add to the lush sounds of “When the Crying is Over,” the album’s closing track. Despite the loss, the album is not morose. These are the songs of a man who is thankful his beloved remains by his side as a guiding spirit, and will dare to love again. Most of the songs are in the vein of McLagan’s signature up-tempo rock ‘n’ roll, though Mac’s keys would be perfectly at home in a swinging blues band. The rock foundation is built on interplay with the stalwart Bump Band: Scrappy Jud Newcomb (guitar), Mark Andes (bass), and Don Harvey (drums). "Loverman," "I Will Follow," and the playful “I’m Hot, You’re Cool” are standouts among the rock songs. Never Say Never offers the timeless qualities of classic rock in a brand-new set of tunes. |
