Local Austinites and tourists alike have a lot to be dam thankful for. Specifically, Tom Miller Dam just minutes from downtown Austin. Along with Mansfield Dam (which holds the giant Lake Travis behind it) upstream, the dams turn the Colorado River into Lake Austin, a water playground mecca of sorty—without the long journey. A whole new side of Austin's famously laid back way of life awaits on Lake Austin. From the first-time fisher or the lifelong wakeboarder, or the vacationer in search of a luxury retreat, this lovely body of water offers it all. Below are a few of the activites.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park
A great spot for a picnic, family reunion, work party, or just a group of friends looking to hang out is Emma Long Park, which is often referred to as City Park. Located on the shores of Lake Austin, this laid-back park offers a large, sandy beach, swimming, sand volleyball courts, campsites, boat ramps, grill pits, nature trails, bike trails, an archery range, and more. (Note: park services officials have banned all hiking in the archery range. Austin.com is investigating why such a ban has been placed on public grounds.) Entry fees are $5 per vehicle, $8 on weekends and holidays. Camping ranges from $6 to $15 depending on utilities. Located about 6 miles off FM 2222.
