The record roars to life with “Always a Friend,” a joyous, pure rock romp without references to his past. “Nuns Song” recalls his life in the LA punk scene as an eager, albeit somewhat clueless, participant in the rock ‘n’ roll game. “Chelsea,” a grit-filled story circa 1978, revisits a stretch in the famed NYC hotel also inhabited by Sid and Nancy. He gives a shout-out to the Kinman brothers and his stint with cowpunk outfit Rank and File on “Chip ‘n’ Tony.” “Real as an Animal” is garage rock pure and simple. Escovedo also solidifies his stellar reputation as a writer of poignant ballads. “Sensitive Boy” is a tribute to his brother Javier, harkening back to the True Believers era, while “Sister Lost Soul” mourns fellow musicians lost to the excesses of rock ‘n’ roll’s dark side. The record ends with the poignant “Slowdown” on which he reminisces about his family and early life in Southern California. Escovedo wrapped the recording at about the same time he signed a management deal with legendary rock journalist and producer Jon Landau, who also happens to manage Bruce Springsteen. A few weeks later, Escovedo wound up on stage in Houston performing “Always a Friend” with The Boss. Currently opening for the Dave Matthews Band, Escovedo is primed to finally attain the commercial success both critics and fans have always felt he deserves. Odds are better than good he’ll ride Real Animal to full-fledged stardom. |
