Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead
Written by Dante Dominick

Tom Coiner as C.B.
If you relish in the memory of the Peanuts gang in lasting, cherubic youth, pondering the mystery of the Great Pumpkin, you better not watch Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, running through June 21 at Hyde Park Theatre. Playwright Bert V. Royals not only updates the setting to modern times, he puts our favorite characters in high school. White Russians in the cafeteria, a misogynistic homophobe, pyromania, drugs…good grief!

It should be immediately clear, the Charles M. Schulz Estate and United Features Syndicate have in no way authorized or approved Royal’s play. The often dark, often hilarious play contains strong language and touchy teenage themes, so bringing the kiddies to see a slice of your own childhood would be a bad idea.

Hyde Park Theater’s production of the off-Broadway hit is directed by Ken Webster. The leading blockhead is played by Tom Coiner as C.B. (names have been changed, but clues as to who is who are perfectly clear).

“If [the audience] expects the characters to have remained frozen in time, well, let’s just say 17-year-old C.B. is about as similar to 8-year-old C.B. as you were to yourself at those ages,” muses Coiner. “A lot can happen in nine years.”

And a lot did.

It is in no way a plot spoiler to let you know off the bat Snoopy is euthanized for killing Woodstock, delirious from rabies. You might have gleaned that from the title. But they play doesn’t rely on laughs and juxtaposition of memories. Royal steers the gang through many of the complexities coming of age requires.

Hyde Park Theatre has staged Dog Sees God since May 15. Coiner and cast have received considerable praise, causing the run to be extended to June 21. Tickets are $17 ($15 for students, seniors, and ACOT members) and are, of course, only a click away .
