Famed Austin bridge expected to be renamed for Richards. The Austin City Council is expected to rename a bat-famous bridge for late former Gov. Ann Richards at the Thursday meeting. The Congress Avenue Bridge is internationally known ? at certain times of the year ? as home to a large Mexican free-tailed bat colony. See our Always in Austin link for more information on the bridge and the bats.
Earlier this year, AISD decided to convert Porter Middle School in South Austin to become the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders.
Richards died Sept 13. She had cancer of the esophagus. The 73-year-old ex-governor also was a former Travis County commissioner.
