THE BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART
Written by Artly Snuff
Blanton DrawingAfter all these years of waiting and the construction of its two new buildings to house the collections, the Blanton Museum of Art has opened on MLK Boulevard across from the Bob Bullock Museum after its 24-hour grand opening celebration April 29th. The Blanton, designed by the prestigious firm of Kallman McKinnell Wood Architects in Boston, is the largest university art museum in the nation and the third largest art museum in Texas. Austin has finally entered the big leagues in the world of art museums as you can easily tell with one visit and inhale the visuals of over 500 years of the finest that Western art has to offer.

With 180,000 square feet over two stories, the Blanton will have ample space to show off its many and varied collections that range 15,000 prints and drawings from classic Baroque and Renaissance treasures of painting and sculpture up to modern day Pop-influenced masterpieces from artists such as Pablo Picasso. The Blanton has easily the finest collection of Latin American art outside of Latin America, one of its many strengths. It also is the home to the James and Mari Michener collection of contemporary mid-20th Century giants centered around the abstract expressionists of the New York School. The millions of novels he sold generated the income to fund the collection that they donated to the Blanton and to us here in Austin.

The Blanton is a new and beautiful anchor to a growing museum district, similar to the ones in Houston or Fort Worth. The Bullock Museum, the LBJ Library, the Ransom Museum and the Texas Memorial Museum are all within walking distance or a short drive of the Blanton. It is a true cultural hot spot and it bears repeated visits.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for youths and free for children 12 and under, so go there and treat yourself to a visit of this top-tier facility. Their hours are 10am -5pm on weekdays and 1-5pm on Sunday afternoons. For further information, call 471-7324 or go to www.blantonmuseum.org
