If it is April First, then it must be time for Spamarama! If you keep on reading those bumper stickers saying "Keep Austin Weird" and wonder, what you could do to help in the weird Austin area, then this is your big chance to keep us weird by attending the 28th annual Spamarama in Waterloo Park next Saturday from noon until 6pm.
This Pandemonius Party of Potted Pork Products was founded by members of the Uranium Savages Band in 1978 behind the old Soap Creek Saloon, it is now the funniest and longest running Spam event in the history of the known Universe. It has the Spam Jam, with some of Austin’s finest bands supporting the Uranium Savages in a musical tribute to the Canned Ham. The Uranium Savages have the largest repertoire of Spam songs of any band ever; the SowPremes will also play. This event is anchored by the Spam Cook-off, which has brought some of the most odious dishes ever prepared to fruition here in Austin. There has been Spamboli, Spamikopita, Spam on the half shell, Spam ribs, Spam enchiladas, Spam Margaritas (!), Spam sculptures, Moo Goo Gai Spam, Spam Cordon Bleu, Veal Spamigion, and even the pinkish Spam Pasta. This list does not cover even ten percent of the worst dishes offered at the Spamarama over the years, such as the recent bilious entry of the Girl Snout Cookies.
If you enjoy living in Austin and like to celebrate its’ weirdness, then you should attend this event with all your friends. You will not be disappointed. For further information, please go to www.spamarama.org or www.uraniumsavages.com .
