Review, Roky Erickson & Texcentrics
Written by Fred Mitchim
ImageEarly last Sunday evening at Threadgills Sumner Erickson took to the stage with his band? "Texcentrics" . These guys play almost every Friday evening around 8:00 at the HOLE IN THE WALL and are well worth checking out. Sumner has developed his own style of song writing which has the influences of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, his brother and a little Powell St. John. His band plays this with a south Austin twang that anybody can grab onto. Sumner's voice sounded better than ever and so did their set. These guys are a FEEL GOOD band and the audience ate it up! Watch for them!

Around 8:00 Roky took to the stage with the EXPLOSIVES! Each performance I've seen so far tops the last. Roky's overall projection is something of a marvel. If you have followed his career from the Elevators to now then you have witnessed a piece of Texas music history the likes of which could never be repeated. His composition and delivery has the character of other texas music legends now gone. i.e. Hank Williams ..Lightnin' Hopkins...Johnny Cash. I'm sitting there listening to him and a strange "out of time " feeling comes over me. So along with the fact his voice, his songs, and his down home guitar playing are kicking your ass...you get to be a part of something unexplainable.....of the best kind! Catch Roky next time and you'll be glad.
