Audience members of all ages will thrill to the March of Toys, the meltdown of poor Frosty the Snow Man, the charm of the Posada story, the sheer joy to the world of Gospel singing, tap-dancing Christmas Trees, the magnificence of the sing-along “Hallelujah Chorus” and the wonders of a Nine-Minute Nutcracker. Will it be a white Christmas after all in Austin, Texas? You won’t want to miss the grand finale! The forecast at the Long Center is for snowfall and 100% chance of songs, dances, joy, laughter and holiday wishes coming true.
“We’re honored to premiere the newest Charles H. Duggan production. Charles has been producing wonderful shows in Austin since 1985, and A Texas Christmas Carol promises to continue his tradition of quality entertainment. The entire family can enjoy renewing old holiday memories and experiencing new ones together as Charles unites local artists, arts organizations and arts professionals to produce home-grown, all-Austin, all-star holiday entertainment. I can guarantee our audiences that A Texas Christmas Carol will be an experience not to be missed!” enthuses Cliff Redd, Long Center Executive Director.
Austin’s acclaimed Biscuit Brothers are in their fourth season of airing nationally on PBS, teaching 3–7 year olds about music and cultural communication through music; Tejana favorite Tish Hinojosa’s music transcends genres and cultures as she combines folk, country, pop, and Latino styles. The Washington Post calls her work “vivid… touching…pointed… playful… engaging.” Tish will be performing songs from her best-selling Christmas album, From Texas For A Christmas Night and from her award-winning children’s album, Cada Niño/Every Child. The talented singers who comprise Amazing Grace Gospel include local favorites Dorothy Mays Clark, Tim Curry, Courtney Sanchez, Rod Sanford and Janis Stinson, each of whom have performed at Zachary Scott Theatre and in local bands and churches. The internationally known Austin Lyric Opera brings cultural enrichment to the community; Ballet Austin is hailed as “sleek and sophisticated” by Dance Magazine and is home to Texas’ longest-running production of The Nutcracker. Tapestry Dance Company, established in 1989, is a non-profit professional troupe hailed as Austin’s best dance company by local publications including the Austin Chronicle. Austin’s own talented musicians Warren Ealy, Tom Hale, Richard Mitchell, Dusty Steinle and Rick White make up the River City Brass Quintet. Zachary Scott Theatre’s Showstoppers is a pre-professional youth troupe that produces fully staged musicals with an all–youth cast. High School football half-time shows wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining without the James Bowie High School Silver Stars, the talented group of high kicking dancers. Austin Classical Guitar Society is the largest guitar society in the United States and delights more than 16,000 Austinites annually with its guitar concerts. The remarkable sounds of the St. Martin’s Ringers, the handbell ensemble of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, will serenade audience members during select intermission breaks. Finally, KVUE’s Chief Meteorologist Mark Murray will make a special “weather prediction” appearance. Other much beloved Austin performers such as Jill Blackwood and Liz Cass will be featured, in addition to gifted local musicians Paul Baker, Joey Colarusso, Chip Dolan, Marvin Dykhuis, Kevin Hall, Brad Shelton, Dan Torosian and Rick White. Austinite Susan Branch Towne serves as the show’s costume designer and has designed over 200 shows. Tony Tucci, lighting designer, has done extensive work in Texas, domestically and internationally. Tucci is the recipient of two B. Iden Payne awards and Critics Table awards for lighting.
