22 Questions With Sarah Reisner-Temple
1- where did you grow up,large or small family,and are any of them musically-inclined?
I'm from Spain. Grew up in Barcelona.
I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters...I'm the baby.
My parents always played music around me. Neither one of them studied music but my dad plays guitar and he played harmonica when he was a kid. He actually won some championship as the best kid harmonica player in the country. My mom sings...I missed those long night playing and singing with them.
2- own any pets?
Not at the moment, even though I love animals.
3- tell us about motherhood.
I love being a mom!
I have an adorable child...
His presence in my life has encouraged me to do a lot of stuff I've been afraid of for my whole life, some of it musically inclined.
4- at what age did the music bug bite,and take hold of you?
Since I can remember. I've always been interested in music one way or another.
5- do you play any instruments in addition to singing?
I play piano.
6- what studio do you like to record in?
I don't have a favorite. I appreciate all of them when I needed them.
7- what engineer do you like working with locally?
I think the same answer as above would apply.
8- what type of music gear do you have,what is your preferred mic in studio ? at live shows, is it the industry standard Shure SM58,for ex,or something else? Are you wireless,yes or no?
I usually sing in a standard SM58.
I can tell you that I do NOT like the Shure 55SH mics around town...they look good but they sound bad!
9- explain to us your musical style,approach,to your compositions and tunes you might cover...if some covers,what are they?
I do sing standards. I sing jazz and bossa novas.
I have some original vocal songs and some original piano music too, even though I don't play piano at my gigs since my compositions are classical pieces.
10- when you compose,is it all you, or do you co-write,or both?
I do both.
My vocal songs I usually co-write. My piano songs I write them all by myself.
11- tell us your 5 favorite female singers of all time, and why.
Elis Regina
Betty Carter
Silvio Rodriguez
Shirley Horn
Rosa Pasos
They are all unbelievable singer but the best thing about all of them for me is their soul and their phrasing.
12- who plays in your band live? in studio?
I play with multiple musicians.
Some of the players I use regularly are Matt Muehling, Sam Lipman, and Brannen Temple. But again, the list of musicians I use, would be long.
13- when you write,is it lyrics first,melody first,or both?
Depending. Sometimes music comes first and sometimes lyrics come first.
14- tell us your 5 favorite Austin restaurants,and what you order there.
Lamberts - I love their oysters.
Asti - I really like their stuffed mushrooms and their risotto.
Imperia - Anything that the sushi chef would put in front of me. His preparation combinations are delicious and the sake does not hurt either.
Polvos - Fish tacos...yummy...
Flemings - Meat and wine...oh, yes...
15- name your 4 favorite Austin musical acts or musicians.
Blaze, Brannen Temple, Tony Campise, Stephen Bruton and Margaret Gregg.
16- I own a pirate radio station in coastal Belize. What 5 cuts do you want me to play of your collective body of music,and why.
You can play anything of mine that moves you.
Because I enjoy it all so it's hard to pick.
17- you are stuck on a desert island in a deep blue sea with a solar-powered boombox. what 5 cds do you have to keep you company for 10 yrs?
It's too hard to pick...
It'll probably be 5 mix cd's with a bunch of mp3's! :-)
18- you will need company there for 10 yrs... which one of only these choices do you go with?
a- Lyle Lovett and his Large Band
b- Asylum Street Spankers
c- Jonas Brothers
d- a dentist
I'll have to say a dentist will probably come handy at some point. After all I already have 5 cd's with a bunch of music...
19- what are your favorite Austin places you gig out at?
The Elephant Room, The Airport, Lamberts, The Victory Grill...
I enjoy all of the venues I play at...especially when they carry the memory of a fun gig.
20- what Austin female singers impress you,inspire you, and you'd like to work with at some point?
Suzi Stern really helped me know about the music scene when I just got here...I appreciate her.
21- you were in Europe this year. Musically -related? tell us abit about your trip.
I went to tour and visit my family.
The gigs were lots of fun! I got to play with a bass player friend of mine who I had never played with before, Tom Warburton. That was fun and endearing.
I had great spanish food and I swam in the ocean...I just wish I had more time to see my family and friends.
