Mr. Creep and friends-photo by Annie Ray
Now open at its permanent location at the northwest corner of Highland Mall on weekends through October 15 and daily through November 1.
For an experience that people customarily associate with temporary spaces populated with the usual suspects (random werewolves, chainsaw wielding maniacs, and skeletons) pushing a series of momentary frights, House of Torment and Illusion Manor will again raise the bar by offering “Rise of the Abominations” a multi-layered, psychological thrill most comparable to a trip through a modern horror movie or ultra-vivid video game—complete with detailed two-story sets, towering animatronic monsters, iconic characters, and chilling scenarios.
Adventuresome and daring souls of all ages are invited to step into the post-apocalyptic world of nightmarish overlord Mr. Creep and his House of Torment as an epic struggle for survival unfolds in a vivid wasteland where civilization has collapsed and fallen prey to biological warfare, social anarchy, and widespread bedlam.
With no law or prevalent power to preside, the country has degenerated into ongoing conflict between the fear-mongering Sgt. Graves and a stealth Tactical Ops Unit as well as legions of mutant inhabitants, known as The Infected, The Contagium, and the growing contingent of The Abomination uprising.
As an unparalleled Halloween destination recognized as the best by The Wall Street Journal, MSN, The Travel Channel, Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Chronicle, and others, House of Torment and its companion experience— Illusion Manor—offers residents and visitors from across the country an immersive thrill that goes far beyond a series of dimly lit surprises. Mind-blowing designs, effects, stories and characters await.
In development onsite year-round, this 20,000 sq ft facility is the only multi-level haunted house in central Texas and boasts enormous animatronic monsters, aerial stunts, and some of the largest (30+ feet) and most detailed theatrical sets in all of Austin. Unforgettable characters and dramatic effects are complemented by Hollywood-quality set design, lighting, and sound to produce what promises to be one of the most gripping haunted house experiences imaginable.
While the entire facility is enhanced and evolves each year, Illusion Manor has been completely re-imagined for 2009. Freshly created illusions and sets surround a host of innovative and terrifying monsters for an unsettling and unforgettable effect.
The entire frightening experience will not be without humor. Guests who cannot make it through are photographed for the “Wall of Shame” and weekends in October will feature a blood drive.
About the House of Torment
House of Torment’s immense popularity stems from the genuine and fervent obsession of its creators—a core team of four native Austinites who work on the attraction full time year-round. In its seventh year, the fifth at the Highland Mall site facility, the operation employs 100 – 120 people seasonally, including 60 – 70 actors, 20 – 30 front end and event grounds staff, 5 – 10 stunt personnel, 2 – 4 control room staff, several runners, and the 5 – 8 iconic characters that greet guests and entertain them as they enter. All production of sets, costumes, make-up, and animatronics are done in-house at the central Austin site.
