Bobby Whitlock of Derek and the Dominos

Derek and the DominosSeptember 20th I went to the Saxon Pub to see Bobby Whitlock. He will be playing there at 6pm Sundays so you have an oportunity in which to catch something you will remember for a very long time. In the Early seventies Mr. Whitlock teamed up with Eric Clapton to write songs and form Derek and the Dominos.
Possibly you have seen the PBS special about the Johnny Cash Show. This is the best footage I have seen of Bobby and Eric laying it down. Its been around forty years so I was anxious to see what kind of shape he was in.  His performance was nothing short of astounding and the stories he told about his incredible almost movie like life were worth it alone. But his voice....If you think he sounded good back then then you’re going to very much like how he sounds now. Unbelievably soulful is barely good enough to describe how good his voice is and how developed and mature his delivery is. One of my favorite things in the world of music is to hear a good vocal performance in a setting without bass and drums. If you enjoy this kind of thing also then you don’t have much time before Brandon Temple joins. He already has an excellent young Eric Clapton clone that just happens to look just like Clapton did in the Blues Breakers. Don’t get me wrong though once his full band kicks in I predict Bobby Whitlock and his very talented wife Coco Carmel are going to be standing room only every time they play. You gotta love Austin for once again attracting someone of his caliber to come live amongst us and sorta raise the bar a little in this extremely talented and creative community. I’m serious folks if you don’t write ...Saxon 6pm Sunday... on your calendar and you miss these first few performances then you will miss one of those rare beautiful moments in an artist’s life where it all comes together like magic and truly sounds as if it were from singer songwriter heaven.
