4th of July celebrations are plentiful here in Austin, TX, but what about live music events? There are usually many different shows scheduled every weekend in the ATX. The focus here will be on a few Austin shows that are free or inexpensive for those (most of us) budgeting for the holiday. These events will leave you with some money left in your pocket at the end of the weekend, but still feeling like you were able to do all things Austin on the anniversary of our Independence.Friday, July 3 - Bob Schneider's party band, The Scabs perform at Antone's . There isn't a better way to kick-off a holiday weekend than to see The Scabs brand of fun, infectious grooves move an audience to dance. You'll find yourself shaking your hips before long.
Saturday, July 4 - Austin Symphony Concert & Fireworks The largest 4th of July event in the city, with a yearly attendance of some 100,000, this Austin tradition is a must see for first time visitors and locals alike. The performance begins right around sunset and includes a rousing rendition of the "1812 Overture" (including canon fire from actual 75-millimeter Howitzers) before the fireworks show starts at 9:30pm. The event is free and seating is available throughout the park. Because of the large crowds, it is recommended to arrive early to find parking and a good viewing spot. Also, this is a great opportunity to see the talented Peter Bay conducting the orchestra.
Sunday, July 5 - Hard Proof Afrobeat will be the entertainment on Sunday at Central Market North Lamar near 38th St. The music begins at 6 p.m. There is a playground for children next to the store and Central Park, a small park behind Central Market. Families are encouraged to attend. Hard Proof has already been featured on the BBC Radio program, The Craig Charles Funk and Soul show, so England has already been introduced. It seems only natural that Austinites should get to know this band too. The show is free.
Whatever you decide to do on July 4th weekend, please make sure you do it safely.

Toni Price has been one of my favorite singers on the planet for into a dozen years. He vocal inflections remind me of a southern -fried Billie Holiday that meets the blues of Austin,Texas. Somewhat private, shy, and not prone to giving interviews, we were quite elated that she decided to open up about her career, and people she knows and loves.
