To the Moon exhibit
Written by Sean French
To the Moon exhibit 'To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s':
Everyone remembers John F. Kennedy's vow that Americans would be the first to walk on the moon. And Richard Nixon was the president who welcomed back the Apollo astronauts who landed there in July 1969. What isn't so well known is that Lyndon B. Johnson, as Senate majority leader, vice president and president, oversaw many of the steps that led to the moon. The LBJ Library and Museum has a new exhibit that aims to correct that oversight. 'To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s' opened Aug. 27, the centennial of LBJ's birth, and will run until July 20, the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. The exhibit includes a full-size replica of a Mercury capsule and an actual Russian capsule that flew in space, astronaut Alan Shepard's flight suit and a multimedia laser show.
