Headliners are listed first, opening bands last. Times listed are when the opening band starts. Austin.com strives to be accurate in times and cover charges, but don’t sue us if we’re a couple bucks off. Tonight's recommendations are marked with our pick.

The Amsterdam

austin.com pickAntone’s
White Denim, Built by Snow, Harlem
9:30 / $10 / All Ages
Garage Rock, Electro, Indie

Austin avant-punk trio, White Denim, continues in their quest to drop the last two words from their “one of the most talked about bands in Austin” status. Built by Snow’s perky electro sounds like The Cars playing early video game music (think ‘80s Atari) with pop vocals; add a crush on Devo and well-channeled nervous energy and you have a hell of a show.  Harlem dwell in the psychedelic rock resurgence, but clearly were affected by the brown acid a bit more than most.

Austin City Hall Plaza

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing…Texas style.

Innovative songwriter with a knack for uncanny, but seriously dead-on, lyrics.

Clementine Coffee Bar
Governours

Club 1808
Masshysteri, Mammoth Grinder, Porkeria

Continental Club (happy hour)
The Blues Specialists
6:30 / No Cover
Blues
20-year Austin blues gem, playing Texas jump blues, which is like West Coast jump blues but with a detectable lean toward T-Bone and Gatemouth.

austin.com pickContinental Club
The Skunks Present: Sons of Hercules, The Skunks, Flash Boys
10:00 / $10

Garage Rock, Punk
Garage Rock Extravaganza hosted by Austin’s legendary punk outfit The Skunks, featuring Jon Dee Graham, Jesse Sublett, and Billy Blackmon, who spiraled from Austin in the late ‘70s to CBGB’s Max’s Kansas City and helped turn Patti Smith, Blondie, Elvis Costello and more on to a little town in Texas called Austin. Sons of Hercules unleash fuzzy garage rock with ferocity, drawing clear influence from MC5 and the Stooges. Flash Boys punk is throwback to ‘70s NYC when the New York Dolls and Heartbreakers were recklessly defining the soundtrack of angst.

austin.com pickEmo’s (outside)
Tribute Band Marathon w/ Big Mess, Barracuda, Orgasm Addicts, The Costellophones, A Joy Division Cover Band, and more
10:00 / $8 / All Ages ($10)

Well, the name gives away the night of cover bands, but if you’re looking for a key: Big Mess = Devo; Barracuda = Heart; Orgasm Addicts = Buzzcocks; Costellophones = Elvis Costello; A Joy Division Cover Band = Motley Crüe. (OK, we made that last one up, but it should be obvious, no?)

Emo’s (inside)
Shapes Have Fangs, Wine & Revolution, The Gospel Truth, Giant Dog
10: 00 / $8 / All Ages
Indie Rock

Shapes Have Fangs rock in black and white, like The Kinks first discovering distortion. Gospel Truth sound like a drunken Elvis impersonator leading a garage rock band not sure if they want to play late ‘60s drug rock or late ‘80s minimalist punk. Cause

Fiddler’s Hearth
The Blaggards
9:00 / All Ages
Celtic, Rock

Hard Irish rock (or as they like to say, stout Irish rock), from Houston. It would be hard to cite any such band without a Pogues reference, but The Blaggards also have a Slade sound about ‘em (to throw out an obscure ‘80s reference).

Flamingo Cantina
The Bandulus, One Pin Short, Proper Villain Sound System
9:30 / $5
Ska, Reggae

The Bandulus blur lines between reggae and ska, injecting soul into the party as well. Las Vegas’ One Pin Short kick ska with one kick-ass horn section.

Giddy Ups (early)
Scott Wayne
5:00 / No Cover

Giddy Ups
Derral Gleason
9:00 / No Cover

Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon

Broken Teeth, Thunderosa, Give Er Hell, Cirkus, Heroine, more
10:00
Hard Rock, Metal

Full-on, high-voltage hard rock from Austin’s Broken Teeth, fronted by ex-Dangerous Toys’ Jason McMaster. The band burns fast and hard with a new album, Electric, available at shows. Heroine deliver hard hair rock sure to raise some headbanging out of fans of AC/DC and Mötley Crüe.

9:00 / $3

Sunglasses and Mushrooms add a reggae flavor to the hard rock.

House Wine
McKay Bros
8:00 / No Cover

austin.com pickJovita’s
Nakia & His Southern Cousins, Dertybird
8:00 / $8
Soul, Southern Rock

Teddy bear Nakia’s southern-fried approach to the classic soul stylings of Al Green and Otis Redding results in an infectious groove that throws in shades of the Allman Brothers, Staple Singers. Soul is always front and center though. Dertybird relish in the glory days of southern rock.

Lucky Lounge
DJ Diamond Tip, Los Bad Apples, Everydudes

austin.com pickRoom 710
The Dicks, World Burns to Death, Masshysteri, You People, Shootin’ Pains
8:00
Punk

The Dicks were at the epicenter of Austin punk in it’s ‘80s heyday and wielded major influence on Mudhoney (who covered “Hate the Police”) and other regions given more credit for hardcore punk. Any concern the decades would temper their onslaught was laid to rest at the Austin Music Awards, where their set knocked the wind our of anyone within 100 feet of the stage. Masshysteri shows the garage rock explosion isn’t contained to Austin alone; the Swedish outfit teeters to the punk side and male/female vocals keep the tunes fresh.
