If there was no back story, this would simply be an incredible album. The opener, “Motor City Man,” sounds like nourishment more than it does music. This album isn’t listened to; it is experienced. Walls melt around a listener as Walter Hyatt’s vocals, with a haunting touch of Roy Orbison, penetrate beyond the surface we usually listen to music. “Sheik of ShBoom” indeed.

Regrettably, there is a back story. Hyatt, along with Champ Hood and David Ball, formed Uncle Walt’s Band in the ‘70s, one of the most enjoyed and influential bands in Austin. Just ask Lyle Lovett or Jimmie Dale Gilmore. In 1996 Hyatt was laying down tracks (he was up to about 40 songs) for another solo album on Sugar Hill Records. But he never returned from a trip to Florida; Valujet flight #592 went down in the Everglades.

His wife Heidi long wanted to do something with the tracks, but a broken heart stood in her way. Some ten years later, she began work on Some Unfinished Business. The songs were finished, enlisting inspired performances from Jerry Douglas, Carrie Rodriguez, Warren Hood, Allison Moorer, The Jordanaires and many more. The plaintive ache of “Lonely In Love,” the carefree romp of “Foolin’ Round,” and the endearing passion of “I’ll Come Knocking” show that a person’s soul never dies. That’s the beauty of music.
