Evil Eye Ball—How Theater Gets Its Groove Back

Past Eye Ball, though late night lensThis Saturday’s silent auction and dance party among year’s top parties.

It’s a trifle surprising an art benefit can be so damn fun. Really, aren’t these things supposed to be white-gloved Mr. Belvedere affairs? The Rude Mechanicals’ annual fundraiser and celebration of performing art has a giant silent auction, live auction, a comedy hypnotist, a DJ, intuitive readings, live food performance…and this is just the warm up. “Of course, at 11:00, we just throw down,” explains Lana Lesley, one of six co-producing artistic directors (and founding member) of Rude Mechanicals.

A hoot and a half for a whole lot less.

The last thing we need this summer is another un-funny Adam Sandler comedy where all the mediocre jokes are in the trailer. Oh, wait. We did. Sorry, Sandman you lost your funny bone (and also our money) with You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. We want a little more ballyhoo for our buck. Zell Miller III, popular performance poet and award-winning playwright, returns to the Austin stage with his newest production, Radio Silence, a glimpse into the humor, heart and harshness of Black culture. Told mostly in the form of free verse, and lacking any real cohesive narrative, Miller’s piece is still able to tickle the funny bone, tug at the heartstrings, and elicit a few gasps throughout, as the performance tackles hot button issues such as racism and sexism with unflinching honesty.

Brass Ring Opens With a Bang

(l to r) Kenneth Wayne Bradley, T. Lynn Mikeska, Joel CittyPlay takes cues from Tarantino and Ritchie, but takes a life of its own.

Still reeling from all the praise heaped upon their last production, HIT (winner of three B. Iden Payne awards—script, director, cast performance—and winner for cast performance at the 2005 New York International Fringe Festival), A Chick and a Dude Productions present their next great work, a semi-sequel of sorts to HIT. Director Melissa Livingston (the chick) and writer/actor Shanon Weaver (the dude) weave a complex tale of two hit men waiting on news for the next big hit, and the woman who could ruin everything. Brass Ring is playing until August 30th at the Hyde Park Theatre.

Leander's theater secret is uncovered.
The audience boos and the actors snap back...it's all part of the show in Leander.

With all the bright lights, glitz, and glamour of Austin nightlife, it’s easy for theater-goers to forget about the entertainment waiting just outside the city. Northwest of town is Leander’s Way Off Broadway Community Players, and though it may not have the glossy sheen of many of Austin’s productions, it more than makes up for it with unadulterated fun.
