Officially, mums the word, but if you were out in Smithville recently, it could have been him. In fact, you could have seen Sean Penn too. That is because the two-time Oscar nominated director, Terrence Malick, just shot his latest feature here called Tree of Life. Nearby production happened in Austin as well as Bastrop and Smithville (also the shot spot for Sandra Bullock in Hope Floats), so it is nice to claim this one as home grown...or at least home shot. Apparently Mr. Malick insisted on shooting here as it was his hometown growing up. He brought most of the cast in from other places, actually requiring Pitt and Penn to fund their own way and stay. Evidentally the Hyatt Lost Pines wasn't offering any deals, so Pitt and family opted for a nice rented estate for their shooting time in town.

The film festival circuit both inside and outside of the U.S. is where the hopes and dreams of independent filmmakers are realized. Any filmmaker can submit their narrative short or feature, documentary, music video, or experimental work to a film festival. All it takes is an entry fee ranging from $25 to $125 submitted under the deadline with your finished work. Getting into any festival is exciting and can represent a filmmaker's big shot at getting their film seen by all the right people. But if your aspirations include a bask in Oscar glory, there are a few requirements and a few festivals that you need to break into.

Local Horror Gets DVD Nod

Local filmmaker's short added to Viscera 2007 DVD.

Brandy Rainey Amstel has just had her short film, Snake Pit, added to the lineup of the compilation DVD Viscera 2007 . This DVD is comprised of horror short films directed by women. Snake Pit was also an official selection of the Viscera Film Fest. The short will show locally in Austin at the Regal Arbor Theater on Thursday, June 26th during the Bootstrap Film Fest.

Snake Pit  plot summary
You never know what life will bring you. Three young people make a journey that turns into a nightmare filled with deception and disbelief. Their car breaks down and they are forced to seek help from the nearest residents. Little did they realize what they might encounter in the rural outskirts of their hometown. They find out that it’s not just things that crawl that bite.
