Lake Life
Lake Life is a Way of Life Around Here

Contrary to many an outsider’s perception, Texas is not all flat, arid desert. OK, we’ll admit, maybe a lot of Texas is. But not Central Texas. The rolling Hill Country with abundant fresh water springs and streams may not fit the stereotype, but then, little ever does. Austin in particular enjoys an abundance of water activity, with three lakes providing the area with life…and a heck of a good time.

As thousands of Austinites make the move to a full-time, shoeless lifestyle in the myriad boat-happy communities dotting the lakes, hundreds of thousands more take advantage of the water’s close proximity for occasional getaways. Lake breaks, or mini-cations if you will. Be it a morning row through downtown on Lady Bird Lake (recently renamed from Town Lake)—which every outsider contends is actually a river—or some waterskiing on Lake Austin on the western edge of town, or a full day on the big one, Lake Travis, just 30 to 60 minutes away. Navigating austin.com’s Lake Life section will help you navigate your way through the area’s waters.

Coming soon we’ll have similar sections on the Highland Lakes to the west of these Austin favorites. Lakes Buchanan, LBJ, Marble Falls, and Inks Lake are all within day trips of Austin, each with special treats of their own.
