Photo: Aaron Reed With the June release of their third album, Let’s All Go to Bed, Austin country-rock quartet The Mother Truckers have cemented their reputation as a thinking person’s good-time band that delivers every single time. As the band kicked-off a summer-long tour in June that will take them from coast to coast, more than 100 rock, college, AAA, and public radio stations were already spinning the disc. Steven van Zandt of E Street Band fame picked one of the cuts, “Streets of Atlanta,” as the “coolest song in the world,” a recurring feature on his weekly Sirius-syndicated radio program, “Little Stevie’s Underground Garage.” Though the goin’ is great for The Mother Truckers now, but it’s been a long haul to get here. |

Photo: Brandon Savoy Bavu is an Austin hip-hop icon...and that may be the problem.
Any fan of hip-hop in Austin has undoubtedly heard the name Bavu Blakes. Be it a mention in one of hip-hop's more notable publications (XXL, The Source), an appearance on HOT 93.3 or a cover feature in the Chronicle, Mr. Blakes has become synonymous with Austin rap. He began his stint in Austin by frequenting downtown's Mercury (now The Parish), and performing/hosting the venue's weekly Hip-Hop Humpday. He gained even further notoriety with appearances on various mixtapes by DJ Rapid Ric and the Whut It Dew family that helped his name reach an even wider audience in the south. His current résumé includes Urban Music Director at ME Television, a position that allows him the opportunity to open the door for newer acts to break into Austin's scene. |

Adrian Quesada “What’s a normal work week,” Adrian Quesada wonders. “Is it like 40 hours?” Seems an odd musing for the Austin guitarist as he takes in the 13,000-foot majesty of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. But Quesada isn’t on vacation; he’s in the middle of a sound check. His widely popular, 10-piece Latin funk orchestra, Grupo Fantasma, plays the Telluride Jazz Festival later—an early stop on a 39-show tour that will take the band to six countries in two months in support of a new, already acclaimed record, Sonidos Gold (June 17, 2008; Aire Sol Records). This, of course, is the same band that captured national attention as Prince took Grupo Fantasma wherever he went (Golden Globe parties in L.A., Super Bowl performances in Miami, weekly gigs in Las Vegas). |

"Thank you Fred !" - Austin.com Administration
For those of you who were not around in the late sixties I am going to relate my memories, and the memories of a few others, in an attempt to give a clearer picture of some of the events that occurred here in Austin and Houston. I will do this in installments and I will try to give a reasonable time line. These articles will include stories about Houston since thats where I lived during this period. Also thats where the 13th Floor Elevators spent a lot of time recording and performing. The Elevators single handedly did more for the psychedelic scene in Texas than all the other events combined. |

Okay folks I'm back with part two! In the interim between my first installment and this one, Powell St. John has offered up a much deeper look at what happened with Folk music through American history. So we're backing up to way before where I started my article so as to examine the political strife in the working class and how it translated into inspiring lyrics in their songs. Inspiring lyrics in songs is really the crux of the matter; what happened here is that our very own AUSTIN TEXAS produced the band that wrote the most meaningful of all the songs written by anyone in the psychedelic era i. e. SLIP INSIDE? THIS HOUSE...POSTURES...THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS WITHIN YOU...MAY THE CIRCLE REMAIN UNBROKEN. So THANK YOU Powell ST. John for you contribution and I'll return with installment number three directly. |
