An American Sign Language Production of Grease

Grease at the Texas School for the DeafThere is an unsung story behind this year’s high school musical at Texas School For the Deaf (TSD) that almost overpowers the re-creation of Olivia Newton John and John Travolta’s sizzling high school love story, Grease. The April 3 and 4 shows ($5-$8) on the TSD campus hail a bevy of firsts. This is the first musical of the four joint theater productions between DeafACT, inc. and Texas School for the Deaf. Though a noted actor, it is the first play that the Director Russell Harvard has ever directed, and it is the first high school play Co-director Don Miller has ever worked on. As with every high school musical worth its salt, this one comes equipped with a backstage tale of complications, frustrations and, ultimately, the sweet release of an uninhibited success.

Republic of Texas Biker Rally on Congress Avenue in Austin, TX
ROT Biker Rally
It goes without saying (but apparently with typing), things heat up in Austin come June. While we’re talking temperature here, that could be extended figuratively to some big annual events as well. For starters, the big ROT Biker Rally takes over town in June. Bikes of a different nature take center stage for the near-ridiculous Urban Assault Ride. Juneteenth adds a serious note of reflection along with its celebration and fun. And if your looking for the greenest way to beat the heat, you should hop along with the Cool House Tour. All this and more below.

May Annual Events

Cap 2K Swim in Austin, Texas
The month of May. You could say it’s a transitional month, struggling to find its true identity as spring gives way to summer. No surprise then that the month’s events are a mixed bag, finding silliness (pun offs and bun runs), seriousness (UT commencement), cultural pride (Cinco de Mayo, Fiesta Amistad, Texas Greek Fest), music festivals (Texas Rockabilly Fest, Kerrville Folk Festival), and a whole lot more.

Texas BBQ in Epic Fashion
Written by Dante Dominick

Wyat McSpadden, Texas BBQWyatt McSpadden’s Epic Pictorial: Texas BBQ

Few books can so instantly transport you to an exact place and feel. Fewer still make you salivate while doing so. Austin-based photographer Wyatt McSpadden has published a voluminous collection of photographs in Texas BBQ (University of Texas Press). The book is far more than a collection of food photos; McSpadden lovingly captures the people behind the barbecue, more poignantly, he documents a fabric of Texas society and way of life, all by way of BBQ.  McSpadden has spent 20 years documenting the subject, specifically, the authentic family-owned cafés that are small-town mainstays. Texas BBQ includes a foreword by Jim Harrison and an essay by original Rolling Stone writer and current food writer at large John Morthland. Texas BBQ will be published in late March 2009, but is currently available for pre-order here for $27 (retail price will be $40).  Wyatt McSpadden will be autographing copies of the new book at Book People (603 N Lamar Blvd) on April 10 at 7pm. The signing will include a discussion and slide show. For more Austin foodie news and happenings, read Morsels on austin.com.

Phranchyze Prepares His Franchise
Written by Bennett Powell

PhranchyzeNew vanguard of Austin hip-hop drops his debut.

In every grass roots movement you have soldiers. The people who do the hard work so the movement can get off the ground. Phranchyze is that person for the Austin hip-hop scene. Inspired by what local rappers have been able to achieve in Atlanta, New Orleans, and Houston, Phranchyze sees no reason why Austin hip-hop hasn’t made it to that level of recognition. But unlike the club hits that many southern artists put out, Phranchyze is taking the Austin brand to a deeper level.
