No joke. You can win free tickets to hear a lot of jokes. And the Bill Cosby tickets are valued at the equivalent of 50 Pudding Pops, so you should go ahead and read below. While you’re at it, learn about the unofficial (but really, official) start to spring in Austin; the hippest art party of the year; all-girl roller derby; a music festival with No Idea what’s in store; a star-studded benefit concert; the launch of Restaurant Week; a visit from Bob the Builder (he best be careful ‘round Austin, lest he be put to work on one of the condo developments); and a whole lot more.

It Is Elementary Dear Watson, See Sherlock Holmes
Written by Ryan E. Johnson

Weird City Theatre makes fine work with the good detective.

John Carroll as Sherlock HolmesSherlock Holmes is one of the most beloved characters in all of fiction, with fans all over the world, even Holmes societies in almost every country to celebrate the great work of Arthur Conan Doyle. So when it came time for Director Patti Neff-Tiven and Weird City Theatre to put on a production of William Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes stage play, they knew they would be working with one of the biggest cultural icons in history. One false move, and they’d have a legion of Holmes purists beating down their door asking for blood. Thankfully, Weird City was able to create a solid piece of work that Doyle himself would have been proud, although there are a few snagged strings in the tapestry.

The unofficial start to the Austin festival season is an annual spectacle that includes thousands of kites flying high above Zilker Park. The occasion brings together Austinites of all ages, and all walks of life in one of the most laid back and carefree of all events on the crowded Austin calendar. While technology warp speeds numerous music, art, film, and other festivals toward the future, little has changed at Kite Day since 1929. Thousands will heed the call to go fly a kite, ranging from from Batman-worthy contraptions to paper-and-tape homemade flyers (see below for how-to instructions).

No Idea Featival, Austin Texas
Improvisational music leaves listeners No Idea how to classify it.

Music, of course, takes up a great deal of those multi-day events, and within there you can find everything from punk to reggae to mainstream. One sleepy little music festival that can’t quite find a seat at the table of any particular genre, nor does it want to, is the No Idea Festival.

Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras parties and events.

Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday on 6th Street in Austin, Texas

Could be because Austin is such a good-time town already. Could be because of our relative proximity to New Orleans. Could be simply that Cajun food and music are so good. Probably a combo—or should we say, gumbo—of the three. But whatever, Austin loves to party on Fat Tuesday (which, by the way, is this Tuesday, 2/24). In addition to the utter mayhem on 6th Street, which does its best to recreate New Orleans’ Bourbon St., plenty of area restaurants are hosting weekend and Fat Tuesday parties, plus a charity Mardi Gras Ball adds to the options. So read below for a rundown on some Mardi Gras parties. And of course—you know we couldn’t not say it—laissez les bon temps roulette!
