One of your favorites turns 10.
OK, raise your hand if Office Space ranks in your list of top ten comedy films. The classic, Austin-made film from 1999 was written and directed by our own Mike Judge. Although critics didn't get it, the fans did, quickly making it a cult favorite. With a tagline of "work sucks," millions of cubicle-bound corporatoids immediately related to the complete idiocracy they saw in the film, which seemed to perfectly reflect their real 9 to 5. Especially with the current mess of job losses, the film is certain to re-hit a nerve for a whole lot of current and recently departed corporatonians. Grab your stapler and head down to Congress for this event. The weekend scoop on best bets in Austin.
Second only to New Year’s Day, Super Bowl Sunday finds the largest number of house parties than any other day in the U.S. (Note: This is pure conjecture, any semblance with fact is pure coincidence.) Including a second chance at New Year’s with an Asian twist, the biggest party in Austin (for real this time) with a Brazilian twist, more FronteraFest, a double-dose of CD release parties not to miss, and even an “American Idol” star doing something worthwhile. And, yes, read below and you’ll also find the best public Super Bowl party in Austin. |

Love of China School of Dance Just when you thought the holidays were over. Chinese New Year kicked off this past Monday, and while the celebration is technically a 15-day long extravaganza, Chinatown Center in North Austin is making the most out of it with a two-day condensed version on Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1. This is Chintatown’s third Chinese New Year festival since opening in 2006. According to the lunar calendar, this is the Year of the Ox, which traditionally symbolizes independence, stubbornness, maturity, and hard work. Yep, sounds like Austin to us. |
