The best of the best in Austin for 2008.
It wasn't easy. At one point it appeared you would be reading a top 25 list. But, determined and up to the task, austin.com is happy to present our list of the Top 10 CDs out of Austin in 2008. We figure not many cities can do their own best-of list and be blessed with such an emabarrasment of riches. If we receive enough of an uproar about a band that unjustly didn't crack the top ten, we could expand this to a baker's dozen in a snap. (Send said uproar to

Vallejo headlines We know that Christmas is coming and we assume that the goose is getting fat, but we also know that Austin loves a good party. So what are you going to do for New Year's Eve this year? There are plenty of choices to ring in 2009, but if you really like live music, and want to avoid driving around or going from club to club, Austin Social Scene is hosting the 18th version of their annual New Years Eve Gala and this year it is going to be so large, that one hotel will not be big enough to handle it. |

The scoop on what to do this weekend, December 19-21. If you’re not in the holiday spirit yet, you’ve got more than your fair share of opportunities to do so this weekend. Of course, there’s The Nutcracker. Even there you have the grand, classical Nutcracker by Ballet Austin, a wild, punk rock version, and another in between the two that’s conveniently paired with ice skating. You’ve also got oodles of local art holiday bazaars, sexy Santaettes, lost Latino shepherds, and more. The kiddos are screaming for Disney Playhouse Live. Bob Schneider is taping a live DVD and…oh…just read the list. |

Trail of Lights take two.
Another Trail of Lights option awaits you in little ‘ol Wimberley. With more than 100 lighted exhibits created by local area churches, families, civic groups, and businesses along a winding pathway through six acres. The beautiful and intimate lighting display has a bit less hustle and bustle of Austin's Zilker Trail of Lights, but still packs a whole lot of magic. The location also gives a 360-degree view of the Wimberley Valley, in case you get there during the day. The Yule Log offers the chance to roast a hot dog or marshmallow. There is live entertainment most nights. The EmilyAnn Theatre Trail of Lights in Wimberley is free of charge, though donations are accepted. It is a walking trail, and is not wheelchair accessible, although golf cars are available for disabled individuals. More info is at 512.847.6969. If this strikes your fancy, you might also be interested in Santa's Ranch just outside San Marcos. |

Trail of Lights take three.
Photo: David Ingram This drive-through Christmas light display gives you another option to add to Austin’s Trail of Lights and and 37th Street displays. Play your cards right, and you can combine a trip to the San Marcos outlet malls for some shopping by day, and a jaunt through Santa’s Ranch once the sun goes down. The display is open through December 31, from 6-10pm Sunday through Thursday, and 6-11pm on Friday and Saturday. The cost is $20 per vehicle (no vehicles over eight feet tall). Located about a mile southeast of San Marcos. More info at 830.743.1293. If this strikes your fancy, you might also be interested in the Trail of Lights in Wimberley. |
