Celebrate The Life Of Robin Williams This Weekend In Austin

Austin never has been and never will be an All Size Fits One town. So, if you’re thinking that your weekend can only consist of another repetitive visit to your local watering hole or a night at home, hoping Netflix comes to the rescue, think again. There’s plenty to do and see in Austin, and you don’t even have to look that hard.

Luckily for you, we got some of the looking out of the way. Here are three fun activities that may or may not be outside of your comfort zone you might consider trying.

A Tribute To Robin Williams: “The Birdcage”

Sunday, August 24th – 6:30 pm
Paramount Theater – 713 Congress Ave. – FREE

If the death of Robin Williams seemed so shocking, it was mostly because the Oscar winning actor and comedian came across as so full of life. To celebrate the life of a man who put smiles on so many face, the Paramount Theater presents a free screening of one of Williams’s most popular films, “The Birdcage.”

Williams and Nathan Lane star as a gay Miami couple who also run a popular nightclub. When Williams’s son comes home and informs them that he is engaged to the daughter of a prominent conservative U.S. politician (Gene Hackman), the couple frantically search for a way to pass themselves off as straight. Based on a classic French comedy film. “The Birdcage” is a hilarious ensemble film and one of Williams’ best performances.

Tickets are free to this screening, with no RSVP or reservation required. However, space is limited and seating is first come, first served. Get there early and pay tribute to one of the world’s great entertainers.

Saturday, August 23rd – 4:00pm
100 South Congress Ave. – $10

For something a little more family friendly, this celebration of the bat colony under the Congress St. bridge should more than fit the bill. Of course, there will be plenty of experts and educators on hand to inform the crowd as to why the bats do the things they do. There will also be art booths, lectures, a bat costume contest and plenty of live music. If you’ve been curious as to what bands like Blue October or A Flock Of Seagulls have been up to lately, this is the event to find out.

Tickets at the gate (cash only) will run $10. You can also purchase individual tickets online for the same price or buy a two ticket pack for $40 that also includes two t-shirts and a reserved parking spot.

For those looking for something further north, The Domain opens a brand new club this Saturday. Punch Bowl Social open their doors with a special event featuring The Tontons from Houston. $10 at the door (or in advance) will get you in the door to see the band plus a chance to sample their various menu items and drinks. You’ll also get to try your hand at some throwback games such as bowling, darts, ping pong and more. 100% of all the proceeds will be donated to the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.
